What to Do After a Road Accident in Belgium? Step by Step

1️⃣ Secure the Accident Scene

  • Turn on hazard lights to warn other drivers.
  • Place a warning triangle (in Belgium, it must be at least 30 meters away on highways).
  • Ensure safety – if possible, move your vehicle to the roadside.

2️⃣ Call the Police – Essential Evidence for Your File!

  • Don’t trust the other driver’s word! In Belgium, many at-fault drivers try to avoid responsibility or later present false versions of the events.
  • If there are injuries or serious vehicle damage, the police will prepare a report that makes claiming compensation easier!

3️⃣ Fill in the European Accident Report (Constat Européen d’Accident)

  • This is a key document in the compensation process!
  • Don’t sign anything if you don’t understand the content or have doubts!
  • Not sure how to fill it out? Contact MOTOEXPERT – we’ll help you complete the documents correctly!

4️⃣ Document the Incident – Photos and Witnesses

  • Take photos of the vehicles, accident scene, road signs, and damages.
  • If there are witnesses, write down their contact details – their testimonies can be crucial for claiming compensation!

5️⃣ Do Not Contact the At-Fault Driver’s Insurer!

  • It’s a trap! Belgian insurance companies often offer low settlements, expecting you not to know your rights.
  • Don’t get fooled! Instead, report your case to MOTOEXPERT to obtain a professional technical assessment of the damage.

6️⃣ Contact MOTOEXPERT as Soon as Possible!

  • The sooner you report the accident, the easier it is to document the damage accurately.
  • Our network of experts in Belgium, Germany, and Poland is ready to assist you!

Drivers ask

What does spilled diesel actually do to a road surface?

It fills the texture of the surface and takes away the grip the tyre relies on, which is why the effect is worst exactly where drivers need grip most: in bends, at roundabouts and on the approach to junctions. The film is barely visible when wet and shows up mainly as a dull, darker band following the line of travel.

The car rolled away while it was parked. What does the damage usually show?

A short, low-speed contact with a single direction and very little deformation for the size of the mark. Kerbs, bollards and neighbouring bumpers leave a level, horizontal line rather than a crushed panel. What tells the story is the position of the vehicle relative to the slope, which is why the first photograph matters.

The car has hand controls and a lowered floor. Does that change the assessment?

It changes the content, not the method. The conversion is part of the vehicle and belongs in the description, the calculation and the value. What differs is where the data comes from: the converter, not the vehicle manufacturer, so the figures have to be obtained rather than looked up.

What has to be in writing before the first bolt is undone?

The scope of work, the parts to be used, the labour rate and an estimated completion date. A one-line order saying "repair front damage" leaves every later question open. Nothing about this is unusual to ask for, and a workshop that repairs accident damage routinely will have it ready.

The air conditioning stopped working after a front impact. Is that connected?

Almost always, because of where the condenser sits. It is the flattest radiator in the car and it stands at the very front, ahead of the engine cooling pack, behind a grille that offers it very little protection. A moderate front impact reaches it before it reaches anything expensive, and the first sign is simply warm air.

How do I know whether a panel is steel or something else?

A magnet is the quickest field test and it costs nothing, though it only separates steel from everything else. Aluminium, plastic composites and carbon all fail the magnet test while behaving very differently in a repair. The vehicle documentation and the part markings settle which of them you are actually looking at.

What can actually be established from photographs alone?

More than people expect at the outer surface: which panels are affected, the direction of the impact, whether a part is repairable or has to be replaced, and roughly what the work involves. That is enough for a first orientation and for deciding what to do next.

What actually causes damage inside an automatic wash?

Three things, and they leave different marks. Brushes carry grit from the vehicle before yours and drag it across the paint. The gantry or the conveyor can strike parts that stand proud of the body. And high pressure lifts anything already loose, from a trim strip to a badge, which then travels with the machine.

The car stood for weeks after the accident and the brakes now grind. Is that part of the claim?

It is part of the picture, and it needs to be described rather than assumed. Discs corrode within days on a stationary vehicle, and the first braking after a long stand often removes the surface rust with noise. What matters is whether the roughness disappears after a few stops or stays, because only the second case points to real damage rather than storage.

Verkeersongeval in België — onafhankelijke voertuigschade-expertise (MOTOEXPERT netwerk)

Omnium of burgerlijke aansprakelijkheid — twee wegen, één standaard
